Photo of the Day

Gianna Maria Canale and Jorge Mistral in a posed moment for THE SWORD & THE CROSS (1956)

The beautiful Gianna was 29 years old when she made this film, one of those pre PEPLUM explosion productions which is all but forgotten this side of the Atlantic. Production values are great and the whole thing has an authentic feel to it but trying to find an English version of this film is impossible. Not to be confused with another Italian film starring Yvonne De Carlo with the same title released in 1958.

This movie is allegedly available for downloading over the Internet, but it is a scam - you have to join a paying service.

The plot - according to an IMDB article - sounds appalling. One of the beautiful slave girls gets blinded. As William Dean Howells remarked, "Americans like tragedies with happy endings."

The only reason I know of this movie is through you, but it seems that this movie may have played on US TV in the 60's. Do you have any type of DVD on this, or maybe a trailer??

Unfortunately I have nothing I can send to you.

However, relevant websites are:
-- Tous_les_Peplums.fr
-- IMDB.com for plot summary and cast.
-- Dailymotion.com

Video quality is pretty dismal for these available excerpts.

Googling Le Schiave di Cartagine may also help.

Good Luck!

"Le Schiave di Cartagine" is available on DVD from Europe and even Amazon.com. DVD was issued about one year ago, so hopefully its video quality should be reasonable.

The problem, however, is that the soundtrack is in Italian (naturally!) but there are no English (or other language subtitles). A couple of websites claim to offer free downloads of English subtitles, but I have no idea how this would work out.
