It's said that some scenes in this and the first movie were reshot. Scenes like this, Hercules training, and fighting with Antaeus to me have Steve Reeves seemingly looking way more big than in most scenes.
I have no idea when exactly these scenes were reshot or what scenes were, because it seems the scenes where he's more skinnier were filmed around the time of his shoulder injury.

Steve was hurt during the filming of THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII.
