Channing Tatum in THE EAGLE
Of all the PEPLUM films released recently, this is probably the least offensive of them all. In fact, it's quite realistic looking and it doesn't employ a myriad number of editing techniques loved by too many contemporary filmmakers. Some say it's simply boring. It's good, not great but good. This was made when Tatum's career was red hot. Today his career is not so hot. Maybe he should revisit the genre.

I like THE EAGLE, it may be a trifle dull in parts but then the action bits are terrific, Tatum & Jamie Bell have a good chemistry and its quite convincing, from a good book too, and its not too CGI top-heavy.
It rates a solid B+ in my opinion. It is well acted, has gorgeous scenery, and I strongly agree that GCI "less is more" when it comes to CGI.
It's strange when I compare The Eagle with other recent peplums that got more recognition. 300, Gladiator, Alexander, movies with gorgeous visuals, strong characters, lots of angst and CGI. The Eagle has its share of tragic moments, great visuals or strong characters too but instead of a tragic ending, it gives you Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell walking away in perfect sync after their confrontation with the roman senators. That scene always makes me smile.
Good film. The scenes in the river at the begining are Vietnam War style, that's new. It's interesting too because the roman legionaries are not repentant of being roman soldiers and fight for the empire, on the contrary of the soldiers in Centurion. Well, there are a lot of other things that make of The Eagle an intersting and enjoyable movie worth of a second part.
