Movie Poster Mondays

French poster for LAND OF THE PHARAOHS

This poster has a quaint 1930s feel to it, not a poster for a film made in the 1950s. Two British actors are portrayed while the US actors are nowhere to be seen. When it was released it was a costly flop and Hawks disowned the film and requested its omission from the retrospective at the National Film Theatre in 1963. He accounts for its failure very simply: 'I didn't know how a Pharaoh talked."

I think the reason this movie flopped is that it doesn't have whole lot of action in it. I liked it because of the scope and spectacle and most of all the fantastic soundtrack.

I fondly remember this silly film as a cheesy "Ancient Egyptian Soap Opera." A young Joan Collins establishes herself as one of "B" movies' greatest scenery chewers, turning the gift into major TV stardom decades later in America. I still enjoy catching this flick when it makes an occasional appearance on late night TV. It's a hoot.
