"The Affairs of Messalina" (1951) starring Maria Felix is excellent. Its scene where the human statues move is one of the best dance sequences in the Peplum genre.
To describe Messalina as "controversial" may be cutting her too much slack. It is pretty difficult to think of anything positive about her.
Admittedly, history is always written from the viewpoint of the winners.
