I thought the "Carry On.." films were pretty silly. The British expression would be "over the top." This is in reference to disastrous infantry attacks during The First World War (Somme 1916, etc.).

Sid James, however, was capable of really first class work when given better scripts.

I spent my childhood in suburban London in the 1950s and early 1960s, so I fondly remember such films as:

* The Belles Of St. Trinians ((1954).
* The Silent Enemy (1958).
* Make Mine A Million (1959).
* Too Many Crooks (1959).
* Double Bunk (1961).

Naturally these movies are in gray scale (B&W) and in 4:3 aspect ratio.

Unfortunately many of these great comedies are available only from Amazon.co.uk. Accordingly they are playable only on hardware that can handle Region Code Two discs (I have such equipment).
