Musings!

Cornel Wilde in CONSTANTINE AND THE CROSS (1961)

This is the pivotal moment where Constantine saves a Christian child from a lion and sets free more Christians. It's a good scene but is it historically accurate? What's interesting about this scene is the set itself. It would be saved and used in many other PEPLUM movies, including all the way to THE RETURN OF THE GLADIATOR (1971). The set looks like...a set. It's difficult to believe a gladiatorial arena would be that small but the movie itself had tons of big, majestic sets, and this one is part of many and unlike the others, it was saved. Like this set, many scenes from it were re-used repeatedly in multiple other films, mainly the big battle scenes.
