By the Gods!

Claire Bloom and Richard Burton in ALEXANDER THE GREAT

I like this film. Great production, great cast, great locations. The one major problem : the flat ending. It sorta robs the film's meticulously layered script of a true rousing finale.

As a side note, I'm taking a break.

I trust you are enjoying your very well deserved time off, but I also really hope you return next week.

At age 70 I am sufficiently gaga that I would not at all mind if you just recycled old postings (I will not have remembered them!).

I'm quite ambivalent about this film. There are great bits of it, such as the sets, and Fredric March in a standout performance, but I really didn't care that much for Burton's portrayal. I read that director Robert Rossen actually shot material for a three-hour film, but the producers cut it down to 141 minutes. Maybe the unseen version would've been better movie, with a more carefully planned and paced storyline.
