Musings!

Ed Fury, as Ursus, tries to survive a bunch of ravenous hyenas in URSUS IN THE VALLEY OF THE LIONS (1961)

One of three Ursus movies Ed starred in. I like all of Ed's Ursus movies. They are real PEPLUM movies. The costume he wears in this scene (and for most of the movie's last half) was re-used in other movies. I believe the hyenas in this scene is also a first in a PEPLUM movie. I can't recall seeing hyenas in any other movie preceding this one. These URSUS movie were incredibly elaborate productions for their modest budgets. The US TV version of this is simply known as VALLEY OF THE LIONS.

Are these movies available in Canada?

Hyenas instead of lions sounds like a mistake to me.

Was this choice made for budgetary reasons perhaps?

Luv, not yet but you can buy DVDs from Germany (need a Region 2 DVD player)

There are lions throughout the movie and they're the good guys which is why the movie is called URSUS IN THE VALLEY OF THE LIONS. The hyenas are the bad guys.

Ed Fury rules! I have some books about Steve Reeves with good pictures but it has been imposible to me to find books about Gordon Scott, Fury, Harrison, etc. It's a pity they don't have the cult they deserve.

I don't know if the three "Ursus" movies, Ed Fury did are available in Canada, but I do know they are available on eBay and/or Amazon here in the US. I recently ordered the "Mighty Ursus" DVD and previously I ordered the other two as a two combo DVD. The "Mighty Ursus" DVD is missing the prologue where the father of Ursus' fiancee is murdered and she is abducted. It is in wide-screen and I believe the Spanish language print was used, even though the DVD is in English. The other two are part of what is titled the "Son of Hercules Collection" and is from Alpha Home Entertainment. Two films are on one DVD. Both are in pan and scan mode. The "Valley of the Lions" appears in what they are calling sepia on the DVD box cover. While not in HD, both are watchable.
