PEPLUM Movie Poster

Original Italian poster of PER AMORE DI POPPEA (1977)

Title translates as FOR THE LOVE OF POPPEA. Nice art. There's an excellent high definition copy out there, with English subtitles.

Much of this artwork, in particular the standing slave and the soldier to his right, are exact copies of Dean Cornwell's beautiful paintings for the illustrated edition of the novel The Robe.

Well spotted I was just about to post the same.

It is not uncommon for illustrators to work from photos, it is very rare however to copy another artists work so closely. American illustrator Dean Cornwell died in 1960 but this could still have been classed as a breach of copyright.

More typical are the three female figures to the right, who appear to be based on characters from 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'.
