Thanks, most enjoyable. However, I was surprised that there were no scenes from the silent epic THIEF OF BAGDAD.

DeMille's SIGN OF THE CROSS should also have been included. Although not really a spectacular "cast of thousands" film, its gruesome arena scenes did involve a large cast.

This film was highly controversial for its sexuality (Claudette Colbert bathing in milk while attended by chained slavegirls). It led directly to the formation of the Catholic Legion of Decency.

The development of CGI is very much a two edged sword for spectacular epics. Casts of thousands are no longer affordable, but CGI can be tacky compared to earlier epics with gigantic casts.
