Retro Friday : A PEPLUM that almost was

(originally posted September 2011)

Rita Hayworth was set to star in JOSEPH AND HIS BRETHREN but the project was shelved when Columbia honcho Harry Cohn refused to have two of her ex-husbands Orson Welles and Dick Haymes work for the film. These test shots are probably the only thing left from the failed production. Apparently Kerwin Mathews was slated to star in the title role.

I have a great photo of Kerwin Mathews in costume for the film. I spoke with him several times about it and he gave me his story on why it never was made. I also have the Clifford Odetts screenplay. If the script is any indication, it would have made a terrific movie.

Hi there

That's very interesting. Would it be possible to send me the photo of Kerwin in costume. And the screenplay, is it available online? I'd be interested in reading it, for the blog.

you can email me at peplumtv2@gmail.com

I've read some accounts that parts of the wardrobe for this project made it into Harryhausen's "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad", also a Columbia film.

Not true. Costumes from Columbia's Salome and Slaves of Babylon were used in 7th Voyage but not Joseph.
