Steve Reeves and Edmund Purdom in the confused & confusing musical ATHENA

Not a PEPLUM by any means but it has two actors who would become major genre stars with dozens of PEP films to their credit. This scene is unique as the two, alas, would never appear together again. So their scenes in this film, certainly this one, are gold (even if this one doesn't make much sense)!

Hey Purp!

It's definitely cute and has some delightful moments and every scene with Ed or Steve (and that brief Ed Fury bit) were gold but there were just too many elements in it. At first I thought it was going to be a Vic Damone musical but then at the end they forget him. lol.

I first saw this when I was a pre-teen and I thought then that the ending contest between whomever--that short, blond guy--and Steve was fundamentally unfair. The blond guy lifted first and just, almost got the weight hoisted but just failed at the top, and then the much taller Steve Reeves tries and almost fails himself but at the end with a last mighty effort lifts the weight over his head...and wins the contest. Well, shoot, why didn't they allow for the first guy's lesser height and weight? For his size and what he was almost able to lift he was actually stronger than Steve. HE SHOULD HAVE WON! Darn it.
