Is it a PEPLUM?

Urma Thurman as Venus in THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN.

I don't consider this costly 1988 fiasco a PEPLUM (it's not listed here under the titles category) even though practically every element in it is steeped in Antiquity and Mythology. The original BARON MUCHAUSEN film made in Czechoslovakia is not a PEPLUM for sure but the Terry Gilliam version, obviously inspired by the Czech one, goes further into PEPLUM lore. In retrospect I would say yes, it is a PEPLUM, including big battles and such but the whole episode on the Moon is most definitely not a thing you see in a typical Sword & Sandal film.  Hard to categorize.

I loved the original picture, but when I saw it a second time on video, not so much. That strong guy playing a wuss was funny, and when he tossed those ships around at the end I was impressed. Robin Williams as the King of the Moon was excellently frenetic as always. I might watch it again in another 20 years or so.
